What does it mean to "educate"?

Publish Date

Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh speaks to us

Look at how we love children. We rejoice in them when they are born; however, from a certain point, we begin to 'educate' them.
But what does 'educating' often mean? Often, this translates to shaping them in our own image and likeness, making them how we want them to be, fitting them to our expectations and conceptions. We say: 'I love you,' but often, secretly, this means: 'You are dear to me as long as you don't disrupt my life, as long as you conform to my wishes.'
True love is a gaze full of wonder and reverence upon man, as God intended him from the beginning. And the child is a mysterious form of humanity: still not fully molded, but already of invaluable worth.
We ought to love children with open eyes, receiving them not as 'raw materials' from which the true human being will be forged, but as individuals already complete in their uniqueness, with their own distinct path lying before them. And we are not permitted to break this path for them — but only to accompany them, support them, and, when necessary, protect them.
