Today, our dear Arvo Pärt turns 91. We offer you a short documentary, „Arvo Pärt at 90. The Composer Who Made Silence Sing”, produced this year by Deutsche Welle, which we invite you to watch not only to break away from the fast pace of these days, but, more importantly, to step inside. To be silent. To listen. To hear.
„I reflected on the meaning of these words: Pleni sunt caeli et terra majestatis suae (Full are the heavens and the earth of Your glory). It is, in fact, about the angelic song that has always existed, which Mozart heard and put to music. It is the angelic song that holy monks wrote and which is sung today in the church. Man cannot create such a thing, such a work, on his own. We know what he can create, and this does not satisfy us. The problem is that man can only with difficulty reach these divine laws, for he is too inconstant and imperfect. The divine laws are hidden from him so that, finding them, he may not reject them, and because he is not worthy to know them. I believe, however, that great composers had direct access to this treasure. But this does not happen only in art. It is a global problem, the same as the problem of salvation: you must die to resurrect”. (Arvo Pärt)
