The Peace After the Storm

(review of the book "Family Conflicts: Prevention and Resolution" by Father Pavel Gumerov)

It's worth browsing through this book not to learn how to argue better ‒ although that could also be an idea in its own way ‒ but to learn how to love more, minimizing misunderstandings. Sometimes, in the whirlwind of busy days, we find ourselves amidst tensions we didn't want, but which seem to ignite from a simple word spoken at the wrong time. Father Pavel Gumerov, in his book "Family Conflicts: Prevention and Resolution," offers us a liberating perspective: conflict is not necessarily a failure of love, but an inevitable clash between two different perspectives.

Father Gumerov subtly observes that, in a crisis situation, we are often convinced of our own absolute righteousness. It is that moment when everyone views the world "from their own belfry," forgetting that God gave us reason and language precisely to seek common ground, not to build walls. A passage from Proverbs of Solomon, cited by Father, has remained etched in my mind: "The beginning of strife is like the breaking of a dam; before it bursts out, give way!" For me, this "giving way" often means a deep breath and a short prayer before responding.

I learned from this book that a conflict doesn't have to be synonymous with scandal; it can become, if we have patience, an opportunity to understand the other person better. Father Gumerov urges us not just to resolution, but also to... prophylaxis! This means building our lives correctly, day by day, so that when differences in vision arise, we already have the "dam" of love well-consolidated. We will have days when we fall ‒ what's important is to get back up, either alone or by asking for help. The Father points out that if peace is the natural state for which we were created, then every effort to be silent when the other person shouts is a return home, to God.

Ultimately, I believe this is the hardest part. Can our heart forgive? Can it keep the peace? Can it make concessions? Let us not forget that the name of the Lord must be invoked not only in difficult moments, but generally, before anything we do.

I hope I've made you curious to browse this book, so useful for the soul and for good understanding within the family!

GENIAL!!!
